Friday, January 8th, 2010 at 11:46

A young 22-year-old hacker has been arrested in Batna, Algeria, by special units of the countrys justice on a request by Interpol. The hacker arrested as he allegedly managed to access a site of the US Defence Department and destroying some secret files.

The story appears in todays edition of the Arab-language daily Ennahar, and has yet to be confirmed by official stories. According to this source, the young man belongs to an international terrorist network and has also allegedly used the internet to re-direct huge sums of money into anonymous bank accounts.

Investigations by US and international security services, collaborating with their Algerian counterparts, have led to the arrest of Y.S., who was found in possession of significant amounts of currency in euros and dollars. The youth has been placed on remand awaiting trial.

This is the first case of its kind in Algeria, although in the past other hackers had managed to breach Israeli sites as well as – following the recent tensions over the countrys World-Cup qualifying match against Egypt – that of the Chair of the Egyptian Football Federation.
